About the Bichon Frise

Every time I create art for a new breed of dogs, I like to study them and get familiar. My main interest is the breed’s history. I love learning where and why a certain breed was created. Bichon Frise, like every other breed has a purpose to be and responsible breeding is meant to protect these qualities.

The Bichon Frise comes from a line of Mediterranean dogs. Bichon’s oldest ancestor is the Barbet, or Water Spaniel. The Bichon Frise was already popular in the 14th Century and already since the Renaissance they were extremely popular in France and Italy.

Artists would include Bichon Frise dogs in their paintings. They grew their popularity to become members of Royal families as well. By the end of the 19th Century these little white Bichon Frise got popular and were now to be found even in circuses doing tricks.

It was around 1930 that they got an official breed standard and breeders started to work to keep certain characteristic as to have the dog we now know and love.

The Bichon Frise has a double coat and is always white. The undercoat is soft and dense and the outer coat is coarser, this mix of coat create a dense substance and helps create their appearance. The wonderful thing about their coat is that it is hypoallergenic.

The Bichon Frise is a small dog that grows between 23 to 28 cm tall (9 – 11 inches) and has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years.
