About the Dandie Dinmont Terrier
Every time I create art for a new breed of dogs, I like to study them and get familiar. My main interest is the breed’s history. I love learning where and why a certain breed was created. Dandie Dinmont Terrier, like every other breed has a purpose to be and responsible breeding is meant to protect these qualities.
The Dandie Dinmont Terrier is of one of Britain’s rarest breeds of terrier. Firstly noted around the early 1700’s. Unlike most other terriers they have a combination of soft and harsh coat and quite a curvy appearance instead of the typical squared shape of other terriers.
I saw the very first one in real life back in 2017 when I was commissioned to do a custom sculpture. I was surprised to feel that underneath that super gigantic ball of hair in their heads there is also a really big head with the sweetest huge eyes I’ve even seen. After this first encounter I’ve only seen them at dog shows, but never walking on the streets.
They are one of the many rare breeds that I find fascinating.
These cute little big dogs stand 8 to 11 inches (20 to 28 cm) and weighs 18 to 24 pounds (8 to 11 kg).
During my research I found a very interesting BBC article that thanks to the discovery of a painting unveils part of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier History and you can read it here.
